5 Breathtaking Nature Parks to See In Your 4WD Camper Close to Miami
Miami, Florida is home to some awesome destinations which any vacationer can enjoy. Whether you are exploring the popular exhibits of the Miami Seaquarium or you are marveling at the handcrafted sculptures of the iconic Coral Castle, you will have a blast visiting the city known as “The Gateway to the Americas” and the “Magic City.”
But there are some fabulous natural destinations within a stone’s throw of Miami that are well worth checking out. In your rented campervan or motorhome, you can drive to them and even spend the night if you book a campsite. Let’s check them out.
1. Everglades National Park
By far the most iconic park in Florida is the Everglades National Park. Consisting of 1.5 million acres of preserved wetlands, it is a marshy wonderland like no other. It is in fact the most sizeable subtropical wilderness area in the country. It has attained international acclaim as well as a World Heritage Site and a Wetland of International Importance.
While you are visiting the park, you will be able to hike, cycle, canoe and kayak through nine different ecosystems, surrounded by a stunning diversity of flora and fauna. The park is renowned for its orchids, and also for its endangered crocodiles, panthers and manatees. If you come from a location where wetlands are not common, a visit to the Everglades is a unique experience you’ll never forget.
2. Big Cypress National Preserve
West of Miami and north of the Everglades is the Big Cypress National Preserve. This area is intimately connected with the Everglades, as the freshwaters of the Big Cypress Swamp help to support the Everglades ecosystem.
You can go hiking or paddling here, either on your own or with a ranger to guide you. Camping in the preserve is a popular activity as well. Hundreds of species of flora and fauna can be spotted within the 729,000 acres.
3. Biscayne National Park
South of Miami is Biscayne National Park. You can get there by taking US Highway 1 or the Florida Turnpike. Once you arrive, you will find yourself surrounded by coral reefs, tropical islands, and mesmerizing blue waters. Snorkel and dive among coral and shipwrecks, go paddling among the mangroves, take a guided boat tour, or go fishing. There are endless opportunities for fun and relaxation here, so enjoy this coastal gem of a park!
4. Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park
When you rent a campervan or motorhome, you can take longer drives and spend the night in comfort in your vehicle. So while there are some lovely nature parks right near Miami, it is a great idea to go explore some of the other parks in Florida.
If you drive a little more than two and a half hours northwest of Miami, you will reach a park on the state’s west coast called Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park. This preserve encompasses 100 shoreline miles and gives you a chance to explore a different ecosystem within southern Florida. Hiking and paddling are both popular opportunities. If you are willing to hop in a boat, you will definitely be able to experience more of what the park has to offer than you would if you stayed on foot. Keep your eyes peeled for birds, dolphins and manatees.
5. Myakka River State Park
If you continue northwest from Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, you will find Myakka River State Park. This popular park is one of the most diverse spots in Florida, and includes a range of different ecosystems: wetlands, pinelands, hammocks and prairies all await discovery. Boardwalks and canopy walkways offer accessibility on foot. A boat ramp makes it possible to go canoeing, kayaking and fishing. There are also exciting airboat tours of the lake.
