Compare Campervan & RV Hire in San Francisco

A major center for culture, commerce, and entertainment in Northern California, San Francisco is one of those “must visit” cities you absolutely must experience for yourself with an RV hire if you’re going to be spending any amount of time whatsoever out on the West Coast of America.

The second most densely populated city on the planet (right behind New York City), you’re going to find plenty of things to do with a San Franciso campervan rental, plenty of things to see, and plenty of things to experience when you’re spending time in this marvellous city.

Unlike the Big Apple, San Francisco feels much more “spreadout” and a lot less claustrophobic – lending that West Coast kind of attitude and atmosphere you’re looking for.

Originally founded in 1776 by colonists of Spain, San Francisco is named after St. Francis of Assisi and remained a relatively small city until the California gold rush of 1849. Once the gold fever became strong, millions poured into California and San Francisco in specific – and it established itself as the largest city on the West Coast quickly.

In 1906, however, a major earthquake destroyed three quarters of the city, and a fire started by the earthquake consumed the rest. The city was essentially razed to the ground, though San Francisco was rebuilt almost overnight thanks to the Panama Pacific international Exposition hosted there just nine years later.

In World War II, San Francisco was a big part of the war in the Pacific, and after the war had concluded it became the birthplace of the United Nations. The hippie counterculture grew up in San Francisco, the peace movement spread across the United States during Vietnam from San Francisco, and today San Francisco is considered to be one of the most liberal cities in the US – if not the world.

San Francisco has also become a major hotbed for finance and business, with a considerable amount of the major technology companies on the planet – including Google and Apple – setting up offices just a short way away from the San Francisco city centre. Tech startups have helped to bring more and more young people into San Francisco, and today the real estate prices and values in San Francisco are among some of the highest in the world.

You have a San Francisco RV hire, now what? It would be impossible to visit San Francisco for any amount of time whatsoever and not check out the Golden Gate Bridge in person, taking in everything that this amazing engineering marvel has to offer.

There are other historical landmarks you want to visit throughout San Francisco – including Alcatraz, now a tourist location but formally the most famous prison on the planet, and the wharf area of San Francisco is something you want to experience firsthand as well.

The San Francisco Bay region is beautiful (though the water is very, very cold all year), and if you are a fan of major professional sports you’ll have the opportunity to check out teams from all of the major sports located in San Francisco or just a trip around the bridge to Oakland away. AT&T Park is a beautiful place to take in a baseball game, and though the San Francisco 49ers play just outside of the city it’s well worth a trip to that brand-new stadium even if you aren’t a fan of the team.

Napa Valley and the Sonoma Valley are both well-known for producing some of the best wine in the world, and they are just a short trip away from San Francisco. This makes the city a great “base of operations” for those that want to check out wine country without having to give up all of the amazing urban amenities that the city has to offer.

The food and music culture in San Francisco is absolutely booming, and you’ll have the opportunity to try food from some of the best chefs in the United States when you visit. Musicians from all over the world come to San Francisco in hopes of “hitting it big”, and you’ll have the opportunity to hear them play as well!

Weather from OpenWeatherMap

The weather in San Francisco is considerably different than the weather you can expect in Southern California, and it’s important to remember this before you pack for your trip to Northern California.

Classified as a warm summer Mediterranean climate, you’re going to get very mild temperatures all year around with very moist and mild winters but relatively dry summers, though San Francisco can be blanketed on at any point in time almost instantly.

Because of the sharp topography of San Francisco and the unique shape of the bay, different neighbourhoods throughout San Francisco can experience “microclimates”. It may be raining in one part of the city, and just a few blocks over the weather might be just as sunny and dry as can be. It makes for a wild experience, and it’s something that you might not experience anywhere else in the United States!

Though San Francisco is spread-out considerably more than other urban areas in the United States, because of that sharp topography we mentioned above the odds are pretty good you don’t want to be driving around these steep hills and streets in a camper or RV rental.

You’ll want to stay just outside of the city limits, near public transportation that can bring you into and out of the city without any headache or hassle whatsoever. Below you’ll find a list of some of the best RV parks and campervan destinations you want to further investigate during your trip.

  • Candlestick RV Park
  • Treasure Island RV Park
  • San Francisco RV Park
  • The RV Park Of San Rafael
  • Rob Hill Campground
  • Golden Gate Trailer Park
  • Pillar Point RV Park

… And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

These locations above represent some of the very best places you will have the chance to park your campervan or RV hire without putting you too far outside of the centre of San Francisco. They will make your trip as enjoyable as humanly possible, giving you quick access to your campervan without giving up any amazing San Francisco amenities, either.
